New York
City has the best hairstylists & hair colorists. Below are
reviews of some of the best NYC hair salons for everything from
hair color to hair straightening.
I
recently began a… well a treatment for my thinning hair and male pattern
baldness. I’m very excited about the process, not only because it may
actually work, but because if it does it will have been as easy as it is
effective.
Andrew
DiSimone, a well known Manhattan hair stylist and owner of FaceStation
hair salon and makeup studio, came to us at spa-nyc.com and said, “I
have something new and amazing and I want everybody to know about it.”
OK. Big discount? New hair product? New makeup line? Nope. What he wanted
to share with us (and you!) so badly was a treatment for thinning hair and
hair loss called Laser Hair Therapy. “Guys!” he said, barely
containing his excitement, “This thing is WORKING!” So, as it is
always our goal here at spy-nyc.com to help you by giving you as much
information as possible – we decided to try it for ourselves and tell
you about it.
I
went to Vartali to experience a new color correction hair
service from Jim and left with so much more. The first thing that struck me about Vartali, especially
being in the area that it is in, is how extremely friendly and outgoing
the entire staff was.Not only
that, but in all the business, no one seemed rushed or crazed.Everyone was cool, calm, collected … that made me very
comfortable, very quickly!I
first met Nora- assistant manager of the salon. She introduced me to Jim, my colorist and got me seated.
Did I really want to limit my hairstyling options by following
through with this procedure?I reminded myself of the days when my hair was too big, too
curly, too frizzy, or only wavy (and how one side always curled
better than the other). Also I thought about the 40 minutes it
takes me to blow dry and flatiron my hair when I want to wear it
straight.I loved my
curls because it takes me one scrunch with a dime size amount of
product and I’m out the door.Would a Japanese Hair Straightening simplify my
beauty routine?Would
it be harsh chemicals that would damage my hair (I’ve never dyed
or tooled with my hair in any way and this further fueled my
apprehension)?Would
it really stay pin straight no matter the weather? Enter Maki, my
extremely talented stylist at Facestation.
Where
can you can relax and enjoy a cocktail WHILE having your nails
done? Don't bar hop at Happy Hour, hop into BELAZZA
instead! I'm sick of
crowded Manhattan bars at happy hour with lines at the bar for
watered down drinks - what about that is happy or relaxing? Isn't
that the purpose of happy hour - to be happy?
I. Love.
My. Hair. Who SAYS that? I often say I love Catherine Zeta Jones’
beautiful cascading locks, and I definitely say I love Jennifer
Aniston’s tousled tresses. I might, upon occasion, even say I love
Jessica Simpson’s flowing Barbie Doll cum Daisy Duke curls. But you most
certainly would not have heard me touting anything whatsoever about my own
difficult mane. Enter Le Salon Chinois’ Japanese Set
Perm
(Ionic Set
Perm). You’re probably familiar with the Japanese straightening process, or
Thermal Reconditioning. The Set Perm uses the same technology, except that
the hair will be curly instead of straight, and the process only takes
about three hours.
For
most of my life I have been a soldier in one of beauty’s most enduring
conflicts – hair that is neither curly nor straight. Armed with a hair
dryer in one hand and a flat iron in the other, I fought a daily battle
against my greatest enemies, heat and humidity. However, one visit to Vartali
Salon, located at
48 E. 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan,
for their Japanese Hair Straightening changed the course of this
long-standing battle forever.
When I think of men's hair color, I always think of Billy
Idol. Platinum-blond dyed hair should only be worn by
rockstars. I am not a rockstar (no, no don't argue with me, really
I am not, but thank you), so I always thought hair color was not
for me. Until now. Le Salon Chinois' expert colorist, Estelle,
has shown me that men can have hair color that isn't trying to
make some "statement".
I
have the over-processed look of someone who has sort of blond
hair, who had it highlighted 6 months ago, and has been in the sun
and the pool the entire summer. Yeah, it looks real pretty.
That, plus my near white eyebrows from same said chlorine and sun,
makes me look like I haven’t slept in weeks. What to do? Vartali
to the rescue!Vartali
Salon located on 57th street on New York City's
East Side is a cozy little salon with big style. Originally
started in Europe and still located in Lyon, France, this New York
City location has all the European style of its French counterpart
with a downtown New York City flair. I needed a little French
style for this burnt out New Yorker. So of course Vartali
was a no brainier. Time to treat my tresses to a little TLC French
style.
Being
a hair-color addict, I was recently in desperate need of a root
touch-up. Therefore I was thrilled with the service at Le
Salon Chinois where I met with Danielle, who has been specializing
in color for 7 years. The friendly staff welcomed me,
immediately offering me tea and other refreshments, and making me
feel very comfortable.
Boasting
celebrity clients like Uma Thurman and Gwenyth Paltrow, and
situated in the chic Soho Grand Hotel, Privé
Salon has the right to be intimidating. One often associates famed stylists and posh clientele with
a sort of accepted snootiness.Well, make way for a complete shift of paradigm.
I
have spent all of my life singing the
"I-was-born-with-frizz-curly-hair" blues. Envious of my
friends with their sleek, straight locks, and then came the solution
that I had been searching for throughout my entire life – theJapanese Hair Straightening technique at Le Salon
Chinois...
Hell's
Kitchen: one of New York City's best known "haunts" for
great food, great bars, the heart of the theatre district and most
importantly the home to David Ryan Salon.
A full service establishment, nestled on West 46th Street, the David
Ryan Salon has a very, hip, cool feel to it.Great artwork covers the walls while fun music plays as
your entertainment.Many
know this establishment for great cuts but they are also known for
their coloring...
There
is no avoiding it: the straight hair craze.
For us not-so-select few, the Winnie Cooper wannabes who
sacrifice that extra half-hour (or more) of sleep to look
"New York sleek" for work, the hours of blow-drying and
ironing our poor tresses so they lay, calm and shiny, until we
step outside into the humidity only to have them kink up again
make us wonder if it is all worth it.
Men
don't need to be afraid of hair color," says Gzime Leka,
expert colorist and stylist at Le Salon Chinois. We have been told
that grey hair adds distinction to men as they get older. But what
if your hair is greying just past that distinguished point and
simply making you feel old. Lowlights may be the answer you have
been searching for. Lowlights isn't a dramatic coloring of the
hair. It is subtle touches added to create vibrancy and add detail
to grey hair. The result is a more youthful salt and pepper, dare
we say Richard Gere-style, confidence booster...
Vartali
Salon's large picture window overlooks NYC's busy 57th
Street, but the energy inside is a welcome break from the
city's hectic hustle and bustle. After a warm greeting as I enter Vartali
Salon, I meet my stylist, Gretchen Trukenbrod. Gretchen is a
new addition to Vartali's expert roster of stylists, but her
experience...
You
know those annoying people who sit in the chair and have the GALL to
say to the stylist "um, well, I don't really want you to, like,
CHANGE the color of my
hair. I just want it, you know, to be different.
And um, can you not really take off any length or alter the shape of
my style...but just make it look better
and really great???”
Well, those people are ME and those were basically my obnoxious
directions as I settled in for my afternoon at the Le
Chinois Salon..
