Salon's large picture window overlooks
New York City's busy 57th Street, but the energy inside is a welcome
break from the city's hectic hustle and bustle. After a warm greeting as
I enter Vartali Salon, I meet my stylist, Gretchen Trukenbrod. Gretchen
is a new addition to Vartali's expert roster of stylists, but her
experience ranges from styling top models at fashion shows to training
the stylists at Vidal Sassoon for years.
Gretchen and I
discuss my hair and my hair "routine". My routine
includes such things as washing and then brushing my hair, quite
extensive. Fortunately, Gretchen believes that a good haircut is
one that can be easily maintained. It doesn't matter how great my
hair looks at the end of the haircut if I am unable to make it
look the same at home the next day.
As the scissors do their
work, Gretchen tells me how the hair styles for the summer are a
much softer look using much less product. That is great news to me
since my hair styling skills and imagination are limited.
As I sit in Vartali, I
realize how relaxed an environment it is. The view of 57th Street,
the sun steaming in the windows, the light wood at every hair
station add to the light airy feel. This definitely isn't the
typical hectic Manhattan salon. The salon is busy. Women
are getting manicures, stylish men and women are getting their new
summer looks, but somehow Vartali has managed to make my visit
relaxed and pleasant.

Gretchen ends my haircut with
something no stylist has ever given me; choices. Gretchen tells me and
most importantly shows me how my new haircut can be styled. She
actually gives me 3 different styles to chose from and explains how easy
they all are to manage and maintain. For the first time in my life I
leave the salon with a 3 great haircuts.
Gretchen's styling expertise is not
limited to men, but I highly recommend her to any man who wants to look
and feel stylish, but may lack the techniques to create their own looks
at home. You will leave Vartali looking good and feeling confident. No
need to worry about what your hair will look like the day after,
Gretchen will have trained you well.

Tips for a haircut at Vartali
Salon:
-Always be clear with your stylist about what you want before your
service begins.
-Don't be afraid to ask questions about how you can style your hair once
you get home. A hair style that you can not reproduce at home won't do
you much good.
-If you are satisfied with this, or any other spa/salon service, tip at
least 15-20%.
