The
Battle for Control
Japanese Hair
Straightening
Vartali Salon
For
most of my life I have been a soldier in one of beauty’s most enduring
conflicts – hair that is neither curly nor straight. Armed with a hair
dryer in one hand and a flat iron in the other, I fought a daily battle
against my greatest enemies, heat and humidity. However, one visit to Vartali
Salon, located at
48 E. 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan,
for their Japanese Hair Straightening changed the course of this
long-standing battle forever.
I
felt comfortable immediately upon entering Vartali. With its clean,
contemporary décor, Vartali’s atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. The
salon’s manager, Houri, was helpful and caring. She told me to make
myself comfortable, as the procedure takes 4 to 5 hours. She also noticed
that I had color-treated hair and suggested that I inform my stylist so
that it would not interfere with the procedure. Big plus.
My
stylist, Taka, has been performing Japanese Hair Straightening for
10 years, about as long as the procedure has been in existence. He was
very knowledgeable and explained that his technique treats hair from the
inside out. Taka gave me literature to read about the procedure and was
ready to answer all of my questions. With the battle plan in hand we were
ready to begin.
Taka
led me step by step through the process of Japanese Straightening. He
began by shampooing my hair and applying a deep conditioner and scalp
protector. Next, he applied the straightener on my hair. The straightener
solution is very similar to the one used for perms and the process (and
odor) was quite similar. When all of my hair was treated, Taka wrapped
my head in plastic and had me sit for 15 minutes with the solution on my
hair.
After
shampooing my hair for a second time, Taka dried it and straightened it
with my old friend the flat iron. My hair was so straight!! He then
applied a neutralizer to my hair and had me sit again to let it set.
Once
again, Taka washed my hair as he prepped me for the piece de resistance: a
deep conditioning treatment. After a second blow out, he gave my hair a
quick trim to eliminate any split ends.
When
I looked at my hair in the mirror, I was shocked! My usually wavy and
dried out hair was shiny and sleek. It looked healthier than ever. Taka
informed me that the neutralizers in my hair would be at work for the next
24 hours, so I was not to shampoo during that time. He explained that the
Japanese Straightening process would make my hair more manageable (5 to 10
minutes to blow dry as opposed to 30 minutes) and would last about 6
months.
With
Vartali Salon and the skilled Taka on my side the hair war has
turned in my favor. Long live Vartali!
