Shobha® Team Member is included in our ongoing training process
from day 1. all specialists & salon coordinators must
complete & pass the initial training program & then
participate in our Shobha® Quality Assurance Process to remain on
their path within the team. the products, whether they are on
our retail shelves or in the treatment rooms, are constantly
monitored to make sure we are using & recommending products that
have the safest ingredients, avoiding all things toxic &
unhealthy. for example, we have introduced Shobha®
Talc-Free Powder in our treatment rooms. (despite its
common use even on babies, talc has been linked to cancer & is
still found in the majority of baby powders. it is because of
this limited availability of talc-free alternatives that we created
our own.)

Founder,
Shobha Tummala
Although
Shobha Tummala spent the majority of her childhood in East Lansing,
Michigan, it was the summers spent in Southern India where she
learned the ancient secrets of Ayurvedic beauty, including the
centuries-old methods used for hair removal. Today, she is the
Founder and Creative Director of Shobha, overseeing two salons where
both women and men can indulge in the beauty traditions of South
Asia, in the heart of Manhattan.
Spending summers with her grandmother in the city of Hyderabad,
Shobha was immersed in India’s natural and spiritual beauty
culture. "My grandmother made all my beauty products
herself," says Shobha. "Hair conditioner was created from
crushed hibiscus petals picked from a tree in our backyard; soap
from a shaved sandalwood and lentils mixture. Moisturizer was just
the cream from fresh milk."
Upon returning to her grandmother’s each summer, she was scolded
for not maintaining the traditional personal care she was taught
between visits. "My grandmother could tell if I had been using
store-bought products from the color and texture of my skin and
hair—it was unbelievable!" says Shobha.
It is also in India where Shobha experienced the benefits of
threading, the customary way to remove facial hair. The painless
efficiency and precise definition that threading afforded made
Shobha swear off wax, until she returned to the US and found there
was no one in her area that threaded. Thus, the idea of Shobha was
inspired.
In March of 2002, Shobha opened her flagship salon, Shobha SoHo.
"I wanted to create an environment where both women and men
could benefit from the beauty secrets I grew up with, in an exotic
yet familiar ambiance that reflects my origins," says Shobha.
In addition to threading, the salon also offers sugaring, an
all-natural gel made from melting sugar, water and lemon juice,
which is used to remove hair from the body.
In October of 2003, Shobha opened Shobha Madison, to cater to her
uptown clientele that had been traveling downtown to the SoHo
location.
Shobha is dedicated to empowering women through employment and
education, and is committed to various philanthropic organizations
that support a range of women's causes.
Shobha Tummala is a graduate of Harvard Business School, with a
Masters in Business Administration. She has also achieved a Science
Degree in Electrical Engineering from Michigan State University. |

Threading
is an ancient method of hair removal with origins in Arabia and
South Asia. It is so delicate that even the most sensitive of skins
can handle it. At Shobha we use special thread, which is twisted and
pulled along the area of unwanted hair, lifting it directly from the
root. You can get threaded anywhere on the face.
Sugaring
dates back to the civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece.
It is a form of hair removal that resembles waxing but is much
gentler and less painful. We offer it everywhere on the body except
the face. We use our own sugaring gel made of all-natural
ingredients (sugar, water, and lemon juice) making it
hypo-allergenic and ideal for sensitive skin. Sugaring gel adheres
only to the hair and not to the skin which means a lot less
irritation (even for those of you with sensitive skin.) The gel also
goes on warm, which means we won’t burn your skin. Our clients
tell us sugaring hurts 50% less than waxing. Yeah!

threading
is by far the gentlest form & dates back centuries with its
origins in arabia & south asia. the simple process involves a
piece of thread that is twisted & pulled along areas of unwanted
hair acting like a mini-lasso, lifting the hair follicle directly
