Saloni Threading Spa New York City

Eyebrows 101
Saloni Threading Spa

I’ve had my eyebrows waxed before.  I usually like the end result - you know, after the swelling and the redness goes away, I’m usually happy with my finished look.  Then I started to hear about threading.  I didn’t even understand the concept.  Do they tie tiny knots around each little hair?  It just didn’t make sense.  So when I had the opportunity to visit Saloni Threading which specializes in eyebrow threading and body waxing, I was a willing and excited participant!

Located at 853 Broadway, just half a block south of Union Square and six stories above the hustle and bustle of the crowd below is a small, cozy space with soothing music and delightful smells  called Saloni.  You will emerge from its doors hairless and well-educated!  This is a  brand new salon; that being said, don’t expect Saloni's expert staff to be new.  They are all seasoned veterans in threading, waxing and even henna tattooing. Most have been working in the threading/waxing field for anywhere from 8 to 15 years.  The ladies are real pros (in Saloni's case "pro" should stand for professor, not just professional).

We started with...what else? My eyebrows.  Saloni has the perfect chairs that recline back just enough for you to fall asleep in, but don’t you dare!  You would miss all the good stuff.  Not only does the staff at Saloni want to give your eyebrows shape but they want to give your eyebrows the right shape for your face and your features.  They want to educate you on your eyebrows and how to maintain them.  We discussed my eyebrows for a full five minutes before even one hair was removed.  I learned that one of my brows is a little thicker than the other, and so it appears darker.  I also learned that rather than remove the ‘peaks’ in my brows, it may be better to shape around them.  After coming to a mutual decision about how we were going to proceed, the threading began.

I soon realized what all the threading fuss was about.  A thread is used to lasso the hair and remove it. It is still pulling hairs from your skin, so it will still hurt at that moment, but the great thing is that it doesn’t really last—the pain, I mean.  In the past when I’ve gotten my eyebrows waxed, I’ve been swollen and red for several hours.  This was not the case at Saloni.  Threading doesn’t pull on the skin—just on the hairs themselves.  Did you know that waxing can add wrinkles to your face because of the pulling on your skin??  Again, not so with threading.  It was quick, fairly painless and much more thorough and precise than any other eyebrow treatment I’ve ever had.  I was very comfortable and pleased with the entire threading process.

After the brows we moved into a private, beautifully colored room to wax my underarms and legs.  I laid on a comfortable bed, drank some tea and had a lovely conversation with my esthetician.  She has been in the field for nearly 9 years.  She told me of Saloni's policy of never double dipping in the wax.  This means that every time they go to reapply more wax they use a brand new stick.  The wax was the perfect temperature and actually very soothing.  My esthetician was quick and gentle so that the pain of the pulling was minimal.  After the waxing, she went back and threaded out any remaining straggler hairs. Aromatherapy lotion and cold towels on my skin then soothed away any tingling or tension.  Finally, she applied baby powder to smooth my skin and allow my follicles to relax.  I left the room feeling smooth and soft, and even pretty darn relaxed.

Amazingly, just 25 minutes after my eyebrow threading - they were already back to normal (and looking phenomenal!!)

I finished my Saloni experience with an amazing Henna Tattoo.  I was pleased to find out that they explain the process and history of henna just as thoroughly as they explained the threading.  My esthetician applied the whole tattoo freehand and it was absolutely beautiful.  A fun summer treat to go with all my smooth, silky skin!!!

All in all, this was a truly unique experience.  They were warm, friendly, professional and educated, and gave me the best services I could’ve asked for!!  Eyebrow 101—Saloni—A+!
