Juvenex Jade Sauna Review New York City on Spa-nyc.com

Juvenex Spa and the Jade Sauna
Spa-nyc.com Review

From the moment I entered Juvenex Spa in Midtown, I knew it would take a small army to get me back out.  It was like being transported to another galaxy, from the dew-touched, swirling architecture to the revitalizing hands of the massage therapists.

I was given flip-flops, a robe, and a towel, and introduced to the spa’s unique facilities.  My appetite whet, I was anxious to get started.  I began with a quick shower, naked for all the spa to see (Modest Millies must note: the open architecture at Juvenex reveals nudity to other same-sex spa-goers.  This is not atypical, and one can always wear a bathing suit if preferred. Also, a private VIP room can be booked for the ultra-modest.  Personally,  I found that the nudity factor ceased to bother me as soon as I began my spa experience.)

After my shower, I entered the jade sauna.  Intensely hot, this dry sauna immediately opens pores and eases muscle tension, and jade is said to have tremendous healing powers.  After a short time in the heat, I found myself in a cool tub, then into the steam room to relax again.  The aestheticians at Juvenex allow you to go at your own pace, alternating heat with cool.  There were two other hot tubs, one was a seaweed soak, and the other mixed with sake to soften the skin.  Moving slowly from sweat to rinse to soak to steam, stopping occasionally for complimentary fruit and (out-of-this-world) tea, I found myself falling desperately in love with Juvenex.  Then, the services began.

First, I was taken to a table where I reclined to be scrubbed with a ferocity I can’t even describe.  A tiny bit painful, this process took off layers and layers of dead and dry skin, until I was pink and shiny, and unbelievably soft.  I was sent to a new room, the clay room, to detoxify.  After a short while, I was brought back to the area where I was scrubbed, and an intense massage began.  I received a short cucumber facial while I was being kneaded, and I relaxed under the strong hands of the massage therapist.  In fact, it was far more than her hands: she used knuckles, elbows, feet, everything but the kitchen sink to work out the knots in my back.  This technique is rougher than some, but ended with me feeling an enormous release of tension.  Then it was back to the showers and the clay room for the final step of my Juvenex journey.  I truly never wanted to leave.  I felt like jello, totally relaxed at the end of this 3-hour pampering.

Nowhere in New York City is there another spa like Juvenex.  One has to be comfortable with the communal nature of the spa: sharing some space with other spa-goers.  The feel is somewhat like that of a bath house in that sense.  But the rewards of that setting are beyond compare.  I have truly never felt as relaxed as I did at the end of my visit.  And to boot, my skin was far softer than I had experienced with other, similar “scrub” treatments.

I recommend Juvenex to every serious NYC spa-goer.  Bring a friend and pay the outrageously low price to explore the facilities.  If you love it like I did, add on a scrub and massage, and make a day of it.  Or a few days; because trust me, you’ll never want to leave.

-Take your time with all the facilities.  You can feel free to move at your own pace.
-Stop occasionally to refuel with fruit, water, and that incredible tea.
