Balayage Coloring:
David Ryan Salon Review
Hell's
Kitchen: one of New York City's best known "haunts" for great
food, great bars, the heart of the theatre district and most importantly
the home to David Ryan Salon.
One of the
first places I stayed when I came to New York City was right down the
street from the salon and I remember always wanting to go in but never
wanting to cheat on my hair colorist - I wasn't that kind of girl!
But I'm young, I don't want to be tied down.
So here we
are a couple of years later and it was time for me to branch out.
It's a new year and I was ready for a new me.
A full
service establishment, nestled on West 46th Street, the David Ryan Salon
has a very, hip, cool feel to it. Great
artwork covers the walls while fun music plays as your entertainment.
Many know this establishment for great cuts but they are also known
for their coloring.
I was
fortunate enough to have a young colorist, Kim, who definitely knows hair,
work on me. When I first met
Kim she was the kind of woman I hoped would not only be my stylist but my
friend too. I knew she had to
be good because hair is in her genes.
She comes from a long line of hair stylists.
Trained at
many top salons, Kim uses a method of hair coloring known as Balayage,
a French method that uses a brushing and painting style.
Now many think I'm a natural blonde and for years I have been, just
with a little help from the bottle. Usually
I have to get my roots touched up every four weeks but with Balayage I can
go for six to eight weeks, which is not only good for my hair but also for
my bank account!
Normally
when I get my hair highlighted I look like a giant role of aluminum foil
but with Balayage they paint on the color with a brush, layering each part
of your hair with cotton and saran wrap.
While the
foiling takes longer, Balayage is a faster more natural method.
It usually takes a couple of hours in the chair to do my hair, with
Balayage I was done in under an hour and a half.
It's painted on so when your roots come in it's less noticeably
too. My color looked vibrant,
not flat. It had contrast and
a beautiful sheen to it that I never had before.
Thanks to the gloss she put on my hair it made the color stay
bright.
Kim was
great! She constantly made me
feel comfortable which is so important.
You want to be able to let your stylist know what you want and not
be intimidated about being vocal. But
Kim knew exactly what I wanted. I
loved the energy of the whole salon.
The staff was so nice and you really got the feeling that everyone
liked each other and liked where they worked.
Reasonably
priced with great stylists, the David Ryan Salon gave me lustrous color
and I can't wait to go back.
