Toni & Guy Hair Cut Review.
With so many hair salons dotting the landscape of
our city, deciding on a new place can be overwhelming.
There are salons ranging in price from under $50 to upwards of
$500 for a simple haircut; not to mention the range in quality of
service! (Here, it must be
mentioned that enormity of price does not always go hand in hand with
stellar service.)
Among NYC salons there are a few that have a very
distinct style. One of
those few is Toni & Guy, situated on Madison and 61st,
right on the border of upper-east-side shoppers’ paradise.
A coiffure connoisseur can always spot a Toni & Guy cut,
angular and up to the minute hip. A
big hit in London and around much of the rest of the world, Toni &
Guy is on the brink of salon stardom here in NYC.
For my own trip, I opted for the T&G forte: lots of layers,
which would work with both my natural texture and a flat iron to create
a variety of styles.
I met up with my stylist, our fabulous Carlos (see Carlos’
Style Tips in articles/reviews…) in the busy pseudo-lobby of the
Madison Avenue salon. The
first thing he did was talk to me about what we wanted to accomplish
today, what was realistic, and what would be flattering.
Then he set me up with a “Health Bar,” which is basically a
deep conditioning treatment. Moments
later we were at his station, chatting up a storm as he snipped away.
There is often that moment in a haircut when one
will look into the mirror and at what the stylist is doing and think,
“how will this EVER work out to be what we talked about?”
And at that moment, all you can do is pray that you are indeed in
the hands of an expert. For
me, this was the case. I
emerged on the other side of the cut in awe of the look Carlos had
accomplished. I was
suddenly transported into 2003, up to the month and day, as modern as I
think I’ve ever been. I
LOVED it. And days later, I
still loved it. And found I
could style it myself, into a variety of looks.
Toni & Guy, in my opinion, is not a place to go
and get your same boring safe haircut.
It is a place to discover a whole new look for yourself. I think it is one of the city’s best salons, hands down.
The general atmosphere is less bubbly than some places.
I found it to be more business than warm and kind.
But for a brilliant cut like that, I can concede the sugar and
spice.
